2006 P Old San Francisco Mint Silver Dollar
The 2006 Old San Francisco Mint Silver Dollar was issued along with a $5 gold coin to mark the centennial of the building's survival of the 1906 earthquake and fire. The so-called "Granite Lady" was also viewed as instrumental in helping the city recover following the disaster. The silver dollar features the Old San Francisco Mint from the left corner of the building. The design was originally portrayed on a medal designed by Sheryl J. Winter. The inscriptions read "Liberty", "E Pluribus Unum", the dual dates "1906 - 2006", "Old Mint The Granite Lady", and "Instrumental in San Francisco's Recovery". The reverse of the coin is a copy of the reverse design of the Morgan Dollar, which was issued from 1878 to 1921 and produced for many years at the San Francisco Mint. A new model was created by Joseph Menna for the original by George T. Morgan design. The reverse inscriptions include "United States of America", "In God We Trust", and "One Dollar".

1976-S U.S. Eisenhower Silver Dollar Coin, 40% Pure Silver, Mint State Condition, Bicentennial Design
1976-S U.S. Eisenhower Silver Dollar Coin, 40% Pure
A 1976 Eisenhower dollar, minted at the San Francisco mint (S mintmark). Eisenhower dollars were the first dollar coins produced in the U.S. since the Peace Dollar series, which ended in 1935. Dollar coins were never popular with the public, and circulated little outside of the west (where they were primarily used in casinos). Even the U.S. Mint considered dollar coins a waste of resources. Despite the lack of public support and the opposition of the U.S. Mint, a Nevada senator succeeded in pushing a bill through Congress to reestablish the dollar coin in 1971, with a design featuring the recently-deceased President Eisenhower. While the bill was passed successfully, there was disagreement between Republicans and Democrats over whether the coin should be produced in silver or base metal (copper-nickel). Eventually a compromise was reached - the coin would be produced in copper-nickel for circulation, with 40% silver coins sold to collectors for a small premium. The Eisenhower dollar was produced from 1971-1978, until it was replaced by the Susan B. Anthony dollar. The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States. While the Eisenhower dollars produced for circulation were struck in copper-nickel, these coins we...

1976-S U.S. 40% Silver Bicentennial John F. Kennedy Half Dollar Coin, Mint State Condition
1976-S U.S. 40% Silver Bicentennial John F. Kennedy
A beautiful silver half dollar from 1976, in Mint State condition. San Francisco mint (S mintmark). The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of President John F. Kennedy, 35th president of the United States. Within hours of Kennedy's assassination, the director of the U.S. Mint began evaluating the possibility of featuring Kennedy on the silver dollar, half dollar, or quarter. The choice of coin was offered to Jackie - she suggested the half dollar (which currently featured Benjamin Franklin) as she did not want to displace George Washington from the quarter. Congress passed legislation to feature Kennedy's portrait on the half dollar one month later. While the Kennedy half dollars produced for circulation were struck in copper-nickel from 1971 onwards, these coins were produced in a 40% silver alloy and sold directly to collectors. Along with the dollar coin, and the quarter, the 1976 version of the Kennedy half dollar features a special design to commemorate the nation's bicentennial. The coin's reverse features Independence Hall, the building where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted by our Founding Fathers. Each coin is in Mint State condition, with strong luster and no wear (see product pictures for example). The coins measur...

San Francisco's Excelsior District
San Francisco's Excelsior
The Excelsior District traditionally has not been among San Francisco's "spotlight" neighborhoods, yet this area is an important residential and commercial zone that is home to some 30,000 residents. These rolling hills south of San Francisco's better-known districts are now covered with row upon row of houses, streets, and apartments. But places like the Excelsior were once sparsely populated, agrarian, and even rural. This volume of vintage photographs chronicles the Excelsior's intriguing journey from rugged swamp and farmland to the busy cosmopolitan neighborhood we know today. It is a tale of determined immigrant families putting down roots in a challenging locale and overcoming adversity to stake out a permanent enclave in this famed city. It is also a story of large-scale construction and reclamation to tame the rugged outskirts of San Francisco.
