ONI 226 Allied Landing Craft and Ships: World War II Recognition Guide

ONI 226 Allied Landing Craft and Ships: World

Originally printed in June 1944, ONI 226 Allied Landing Craft and Ships presents a categorical description of the various landing ships, craft, barges, vehicles and support, supply and repair craft used in amphibious operations during WWII. These include many of the LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel) designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins, whose “Higgins Boats” were used extensively in both the Pacific and European theaters. Created by the Office of Naval Intelligence, which produced an important series of recognition guides for officers and staff, ONI 226 contains numerous data tables, designation information, outboard drawings and photographs. From the “Torch” landings in North Africa to the Normandy invasion, Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima, landing craft proved vital to the success of the Allies. No wonder this book was originally classified as restricted. Now declassified, this high quality reprint is slightly reformatted but presents the original text in its entirety.

Landing Craft, Infantry and Fire Support (New Vanguard)

Landing Craft, Infantry and Fire Support (New

Described by one soldier as "a metal box designed by a sadist to move soldiers across the water," the Landing Craft, Infantry was a large beaching craft intended to transport and deliver an infantry rifle company to a hostile shore, once the beachhead was secured. The LCI, or as it was more commonly known, "Elsie Item," and its vehicle-delivery counterpart, the Landing Ship, Medium (LSM), were widely used by the allies during amphibious operations during World War II. They were mid-sized beaching craft filling the gap between the much larger LST and the many types of smaller bow-ramped, open cargo compartment landing craft. The LCI and LSM were the smallest landing ships assigned a Bureau of Ships hull number. In 1943 the hulls of the LCI and LSM were used as the basis for a new type of gunboat. These specialized fire-support crafts were intended to place suppressive fire on the landing beaches using automatic cannons, rockets, and mortars. While LCI and LSM were phased out after the Korean War, some fire support craft remained in use throughout the Vietnam War.Written by the author of Osprey's popular book on Landing Ship, Tanks, this book tells the developmental and operational history of this important tool of American amphibious military strategy that spanned three wars.

U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Amphibious Operations in the

Three excellent reports have been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction: Amphibious Operations in the 21st Century, Amphibious Ships and Landing Craft Data Book, Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Overview. There will continue to be a blurring of what was previously thought to be distinct forms of war or conflict—conventional war, irregular challenges, terrorism, and criminality—into what can be described as hybrid challenges. Hybrid challenges can be posed by states, proxy forces, or armed groups attempting to impose excessive political, human, and materiel costs in order to undermine their adversary's resolve and commitment. Thus, we expect opponents—operating in a highly dispersed manner—to blend different approaches, integrating all forms of weapons and technology to oppose our efforts. All of these challenges combined illustrate the importance of being able to operate in littoral regions, which encompass the confluence of water, air, and land. The littoral is composed of two segments. The seaward portion is that area from the open ocean to the shore that must be controlled to support operations ashore. The landward portion is the area inland from the shore that can be supported and defended directl...

U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft: An Illustrated Design History

U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft: An Illustrated Design

As in earlier volumes in the series, this study sheds light on past decisions by presenting previously unpublished documents that illustrate not only what was actually built but also what was planned and never brought into service. For example, this book offers the first comprehensive and fully illustrated account of abortive attempts in the 1960s and beyond to build new fire support ships (LFSs). With nearly three hundred photographs and specially commissioned line drawings and extensive appendixes, this work conveniently brings together details of the ships and their service histories found elsewhere only in scattered official references.

American Amphibious Gunboats in World War II: A History of LCI and LCS(L) Ships in the Pacific

American Amphibious Gunboats in World War II: A

As the United States began its campaign against numerous Japanese-held islands in the Pacific, Japanese tactics required them to develop new weapons and strategies. One of the most crucial to the island assaults was a new group of amphibious gunboats that could deliver heavy fire close in to shore as American forces landed. These gunboats were also to prove important in the interdiction of inter-island barge traffic and, late in the war, the kamikaze threat. Several variations of these gunboats were developed, based on the troop carrying LCI(L). They included three conversions of the LCI(L), with various combinations of guns, rockets and mortars, and a fourth gunboat, the LCS(L), based on the same hull but designed as a weapons platform from the beginning. By the end of the war the amphibious gunboats had proven their worth.

The U.s. Navy's "Interim" LSM(R)s in World War II: Rocket Ships of the Pacific Amphibious Forces

The U.s. Navy's "Interim" LSM(R)s in World War

The "Interim" LSM(R) or Landing Ship, Medium (Rocket) was a revolutionary development in rocket warfare in World War II and the U.S. Navy's first true rocket ship. An entirely new class of commissioned warship and the forerunners of today's missile-firing naval combatants, these ships began as improvised conversions of conventional amphibious landing craft in South Carolina's Charleston Navy Yard during late 1944. They were rushed to the Pacific Theatre to support the U.S. Army and Marines with heavy rocket bombardments that devastated Japanese forces on Okinawa in 1945. Their primary mission was to deliver maximum firepower to enemy targets ashore. Yet LSM(R)s also repulsed explosive Japanese speed boats, rescued crippled warships, recovered hundreds of survivors at sea and were deployed as antisubmarine hunter-killers. Casualties were staggering: enemy gunfire blasted one, while kamikaze attacks sank three, crippled a fourth and grazed two more. This book provides a comprehensive operational history of the Navy's 12 original "Interim" LSM(R)s.

The 2020-2025 World Outlook for Amphibious Landing Crafts

The 2020-2025 World Outlook for Amphibious Landing

This study covers the world outlook for amphibious landing crafts across more than 190 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region, and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for amphibious landing crafts. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national market...

World War II at Sea: A Global History

World War II at Sea: A Global

Author of Lincoln and His Admirals (winner of the Lincoln Prize), The Battle of Midway (Best Book of the Year, Military History Quarterly), and Operation Neptune, (winner of the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature), Craig L. Symonds has established himself as one of the finest naval historians at work today. World War II at Sea represents his crowning achievement: a complete narrative of the naval war and all of its belligerents, on all of the world's oceans and seas, between 1939 and 1945.Opening with the 1930 London Conference, Symonds shows how any limitations on naval warfare would become irrelevant before the decade was up, as Europe erupted into conflict once more and its navies were brought to bear against each other. World War II at Sea offers a global perspective, focusing on the major engagements and personalities and revealing both their scale and their interconnection: the U-boat attack on Scapa Flow and the Battle of the Atlantic; the "miracle" evacuation from Dunkirk and the pitched battles for control of Norway fjords; Mussolini's Regia Marina-at the start of the war the fourth-largest navy in the world-and the dominance of the Kidö Butai and Japanese naval power in the Pacific; Pearl Harbor then Midway; the struggles of the Russian Navy and the scuttl...

The Boat that Won the War: An Illustrated History of the Higgins LCVP

The Boat that Won the War: An Illustrated

The Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel--LCVP for short, or simply the "Higgins boat" to most of its users--was "the boat that won the war," according to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Like the Jeep or the C-47 transport, it served in almost every theatre of World War II, performing unglamorous but vital service in the Allied cause. This book combines the first in-depth history of the development and employment of the type, with a detailed description of its construction, machinery, performance, and handling, based on the author's first-hand experience guiding the restoration of a wartime example for his museum. Well illustrated with plans and photographs, it will be of interest to model makers and enthusiasts, both military and naval.
