Borghese Gardens Aviary
A 2015 trip to show "The Three Graces" at "Art Monaco 2015" was my excuse for a visit to Italy too. The Borghese Gallery in Rome is a must see far a serious art museum loyalist. Waiting to get in, the view to my left was this fabulous Aviary. The warm morning light enhancing the colors and creating marvelous patterns of light and shade made for an evocative oil painting.

Palazzi of Rome: Splendor and Pride
Palazzi of Rome: Splendor and
Palazzi of Rome presents the most magnificent Roman villas and palaces. Brilliant photographs capture the atmosphere of the buildings in their full grandeur and exquisiteness. They lead readers past decorated façades and guide them through elegant halls and artfully arranged gardens. The texts explain how closely the history of the famed dynasties―the Borgheses, Farneses, Colonnas, Corsinis, and other old families―is intertwined with their ancestral seats, and how for centuries the higher Roman nobility designed their palaces in the City of Cities as fitting reflections of their own glory. This competition for the most magnificent residence led to the construction of many of the city’s most famous palazzi, which are still today among the unmistakable hallmarks of Rome.

The Borghese Gallery (Heritage Guides) by Moreno, Paolo, Stefani, Chiara (2001) Paperback
Villa Borghese; The Aviary, the Meridiana Pavilion and the Secret Gardens
Villa Borghese; The Aviary, the Meridiana Pavilion and
"Using in-depth research into the Borghese family archives + a careful re-examination of the restoration of the nucleus of Villa Borghese containing the Aviary + Meridiana pavillians + the 3 Secret Gardens, this book reconstructs the history of Scipione Borghese's sumptuous 17th-century residence conceived as a dialogue between art + nature. It examines the leitmotifs of hospitality + the golden age that inspired Scipione's ideological project as well as his passion for collecting, focusing on the contrast between 'pars urbana' + 'pars rustice,' both required to ensure that totality of aesthetic + daily experiences for which the villa was designed + created. "This richly suggestive book deals with a wealth of subjects ranging from the species of birds bred + confined in the Aviary to the sophisticated painting techniques used in the decorative schemes. It also reconstructs the vicissitudes of the Secret Gardens, from their days of glory to their abandonment, concluding with the recent restoration, which involved the reintroduction of flowers in vogue during the 17th century, the rarest examples of which are described in detailed botanical fact sheets."
