A Short Guide: 50 Masterpieces in the John
Excerpt from A Short Guide: 50 Masterpieces in the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida OF all late 15th century Florentine painters, Piero di Cosimo was one of the few gifted with a sense of humor. Apart from its intrinsic beauty and documentary interest as an illustration of the building procedures of that day, there is to be noted in this painting the disarming wit of the busy figures at their various pursuits. The 15th century's interest in science is reflected in the correct rendering of the perspective, and the artist's almost naive pride in his knowledge of its laws. Figures become smaller as they recede into the distance; parallel lines converge at the so-called vanishing point - here, the central pivot of the composition. The foreshortened stone figure of the child in the left foreground is yet another indication of the passionate interest of the Renaissance mind in transcribing visual reality to the painted surface. The Italian Renaissance was an age of inquiry into the significance of man and his works. Its birthplace was Florence, where all the arts began then to blossom nourished by intellectuals, and patronized by wealthy princes, bankers and merchants. Renaissance means rebirth: the rebirth (so its proponents contended) of classical antiquity, o...

Images of America: Sarasota celebrates the unique history of one of Florida's most beautiful communities. Once a modest town, known for its ranching, hunting, fishing, and farming, Sarasota has grown into a thriving city. It became a town in 1902 and separated from Manatee County to become Sarasota County in 1921. Surrounded by sparkling water, soft sand beaches, abundant protected wildlife, and spectacular sunsets, Sarasota was and still is a great place to live or visit. This volume contains more than 200 prized images of Sarasota from the mid-1800s to the 1930s. Highlighted are the people who helped to transform the area from a small fishing village into a booming tourist and cultural center. Some of the early pioneers included are fisherman and cattleman William Whitaker; farmers John and Eliza Webb; Scotsman, golfer, and developer J.H. Gillespie; builder Harry Higel; developer and experimental agriculturist Mrs. Potter Palmer; developer Owen Burns; Real Estate promoter J.H. Lord; and circus people and promoters John and Mable Ringling, who left a legacy to the state including their mansion Ca' d'Zan, The John and Mable Ringling Museum, and The Ringling School of Art.

Sarasota's Asolo:: A History of the State Theatre

Performances were held in the Historic Asolo Theater, relocated from its home in Italy in 1950. Over the past fifty years, the Asolo Repertory Theatre has become a renowned fixture in the Sarasota community, thriving thanks to a remarkable collaboration between FSU, the State of Florida, the Ringling Museum and the Asolo's regional supporters. Follow retired Asolo actor and director Brad Wallace as he relives the magnificent history of this beloved institution.

Sarasota: A History (Definitive
Sarasota, Florida was not always the thriving urban community that residents know today. This popular tourist destination on the Gulf Coast began its course of modern development with the Homestead Act of 1862 and a promise to the inhabitants of Scotland that the land awaiting them in Florida was one of "milk and honey where gold grew on trees." Little did the first settlers know that within a hundred years the deserted land they then called home would transform itself not only into a bustling real estate and tourism hub, but also into a charming community with a personality all its own. From the 1920s to the 1960s, the Gulf Coast town was described as "a community where no one was a stranger." In the 1920s, however, a clairvoyant full-page ad in the Sarasota Herald predicted, "Sarasota's Growth Cannot Be Stopped." Indeed it couldn't. Sarasota soon became nationally known for its connection to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, its famous art museum, and its celebration of modern architecture.A long time resident of Sarasota, Florida, Jeff LaHurd's ninth published work is his most comprehensive account of Sarasota's history to date. In this precise exploration of the city's history, LaHurd masterfully chronicles the lives lived and the fluctuating growth of Sarasota...

•Dangerous Women presents works from the rich holdings of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art that explore different artists' responses to the women of the Bible•Evokes a politically charged theme celebrating the strength of women and their ability to take back power in adverse circumstances•Features contributions from leading scholars of feminist and Renaissance art•Accompanies exhibition at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum (September 8 - December 30, 2018)The Old and New Testaments are full of compelling female characters: good wives and bad, courageous heroines, and deceptive - sometimes deadly - femmes fatales. Dangerous Women presents works from the rich holdings of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art that explore different artists' responses to the women of the Bible. Paintings by Pietro da Cortona, Francesco Cairo, and Fede Galizia and others stand as a reminder of how dangerous biblical women have continued to loom large in the modern imagination. These stories in this volume show how narratives of power are constructed, interpreted, and continue to evolve over the course of time. While some women saved their people, were paragons of virtue, or repented, others were purveyors of sin, harlots, and seductresses. Ev...
